We love to share our
llamas with the general public. For many people, it is the first time that they
get to experience a llama's inquisitive nature up close. We enjoy taking our
llamas to schools, nursing homes, parades, farm days and many other public
relation activities. One time we even took llamas to our local civic center
where they got to ride in the elevator to attend a program where we were the
guests of honor! Imagine the attention we got as we climbed into and out of the
elevator!
Children and llamas are a wonderful sight to behold. We have
school groups of all ages that visit our farm to learn about llamas. My
favorite group is the preschoolers...you can only imagine some of the crazy
questions they ask!
Every summer we host a llama camp in
conjunction with our local Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center for children ages
8-15. The camps are one week long and each child adopts one of our llamas for
the week. They spend the week learning about llamas, feeding and grooming them,
training them to perform tricks for our "Llama Talent Show" and also working
with them teaching them to go through an obstacle course. We go on nature
hikes, play games, and do a variety of craft projects using the llamas' fiber.
Many of the children that attend llama camp live in a large city and have had
little to no exposure to animals of any kind...so a week at our farm with all
the llamas, horses, goats, dogs and cats is quite an experience. I love to
watch how the children bond with their llamas over the course of one week...By
week's end, some of the children can hardly bear to leave their llamas..but
they do and they take with them a wealth of experiences relating to trust,
companionship, love, and awe at God's handiwork in these amazing animals.
